A heated election, an untimely spring snowstorm and a tragic accident were but a few of the top stories that graced the front pages of the Pioneer Enterprise in 2013. Some of those events had a larger community-wide impact than others, but all left a lasting impression on the greater southern Cerro Gordo County area last year.
What follows are the Top 13 stories of 2013 compiled by the Pioneer Enterprise news staff. Some of the stories aren’t yet finished, and they will no doubt continue creating headlines in 2014 and beyond. However, they all played an integral role in making 2013 the memorable year that it was.
1. Devlin Obregon
Area residents mourned the death of Devlin Obregon, 7, following a Nov. 1 accident near the Five Star Co-op on Main Street in Swaledale.
Obregon was playing in the street with friends when the accident occurred. According to the Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office, a grain truck driven by Robert Quinlan of Rockwell struck Obregon when the youngster was running alongside the vehicle trying to get the driver to honk the horn. Obregon was in the truck’s blind spot, and Quinlan was unaware the boy was so close when he made the turn.
